The U.S. Senate recently passed a bill related to TikTok, which restricts TikTok from being separated from its parent company Bytedance (Bytedance), otherwise TikTok will be banned from operating in the United States. The bill is being sent to US President Joe Biden for his signature. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin responded that China had previously stated its principled position on the TikTok bill.

According to “Reuters”, the U.S. House of Representatives is concerned that China may use TikTok to spy on the United States and obtain data. Therefore, the TikTok bill was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last Saturday (20th), and was subsequently passed by the Senate on Tuesday with 79 votes to 18. The vote passed overwhelmingly. “Reuters” quoted US President Joe Biden as saying that the bill will be signed on Wednesday (26th).

Foreign media “Reuters” quoted expert opinions as saying that after the TikTok bill was passed and signed into law, ByteDance has 270 days to divest TikTok’s business in the United States. If there are signs that ByteDance is actively selling TikTok and the transaction has made significant progress, the government may An additional 3 months grace period will be provided. If ByteDance cannot divest TikTok within the deadline, the law will give the U.S. government the power to ban TikTok from continuing to operate in the United States, and Apple App Store, Google Play or other companies will no longer be able to legally provide services to TikTok.

U.S. Democratic Senator Ed Markey believes that it will be difficult for ByteDance to divest TikTok within a limited period. At the same time, he added that this will be the most complex transaction in history, and due diligence work will need to be calculated in months or even years.

TikTok has previously fought back against bans. According to the “Central News Agency” report, TikTok once added a banner at the top of the application page to encourage users to “oppose the TikTok ban” (Stop the TikTok ban). After clicking the banner, they will be redirected to the contact information of federal senators in each constituency. Encourage Users complained to senators. TikTok has also launched a political counterattack on the grounds of “freedom of speech”. For example, it has aired advertisements alleging that the TikTok ban is actually a ban on the free speech of 170 million users.
