[The Epoch Times, May 25, 2023](Reported by Epoch Times special reporter Zhang Mingjian) In the past ten years, China has launched three aircraft carriers one after another, and two have entered service. Suspicions of “espionage” and “corruption” hang over the CCP’s military-industrial system, and its lax combat effectiveness has made it an international laughing stock.
In mid-May, Li Jianming, deputy director of the 711 Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and chief accountant, died suddenly at the age of 52. On the evening of May 17, the WeChat official account of the 711 Research Institute released an obituary. A few days ago, Li Jianming “died on duty” during a business trip.
The obituary did not specify the specific cause of Li Jianming’s death, and the phrase “died on duty” is also very intriguing. It seems that the authorities deliberately kept a low profile on his death and the news of his death.
Li Jianming was the chief accountant before his death. He managed the “treasury” of the 711 Research Institute. A large amount of funds flowed in and out of his hands. At the same time, his working environment also involved the CCP’s military industry secrets. Class ship power research and development base, the main products include conventional power systems for aircraft carriers and other large ships.
The core personnel in the military field involved in the recent accident, as well as Chen Fusheng, the former director of Huazhong Optoelectronics Technology Research Institute (Military Industry No. 717 Research Institute), another important scientific research department under CSSC, was dismissed on March 16. The case is under investigation stage.
The 717 Research Institute is affiliated to China Shipbuilding Corporation, and is mainly engaged in the research of optoelectronic and navigation technology based on engineering optics, focusing on laser technology and infrared technology, and the research and development of large-scale special optoelectronics (laser weapons). Chen Fusheng is an expert in ship optoelectronic systems. He was hired as a member of the Science and Technology Committee of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation in 2016. He returned to his alma mater, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology in May 2019, to explain the construction and development of China’s ship optoelectronic systems for the Jiangsu University of Science and Technology leadership training class. direction, as well as a number of cutting-edge technologies related to military industry.
The main body of CSSC is composed of its subsidiary CSSC and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, including research institutes with military industry numbers 711 and 717. CSSC is the core military ship research and construction unit of the Communist Party of China. The main body of naval weapons and equipment research, design, production, testing, and support is responsible for the research and construction of all the main combat equipment of the Chinese Communist Navy represented by aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines.
In June 2018, Sun Bo, the general manager of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, responsible for the transformation of the Liaoning aircraft carrier and the design and construction of the CCP’s first domestically-made aircraft carrier Shandong, was sacked. In July of the following year, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison on economic charges. According to the official statement, in view of the fact that the criminal facts and evidence in the Sun Bo case involve state secrets, the CCP court will conduct a closed trial of the case.
At that time, the Russian Satellite News Agency reported that after the completion of the CCP’s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, Sun Bo, the general manager of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, who was in charge of supervising the construction, sold confidential information such as the design and specifications of the Liaoning to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) within several years. CIA), allowing the United States to fully grasp the construction process and technical level of the CCP’s aircraft carrier.
Since the CCP’s first self-made aircraft carrier, the Shandong ship, was remodeled after the Liaoning, some people speculate that Sun Bo may also have given the design drawings of the Shandong ship to the CIA.
Then in May 2020, Hu Wenming, the former chairman of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, was sacked. He once served as the commander-in-chief of the development of China’s first domestically-made aircraft carrier Shandong. It is rumored that Hu Wenming was suspected of betraying the interests of the state during his tenure, accepting bribes as high as 5.28 billion yuan. The case entered the court trial stage in February 2021, and there has been no progress for more than two years. There is no further information on whether it involves the leakage of military secrets to foreign intelligence agencies.
In the two to three years before and after Hu Wenming’s fall, several core personnel in the CCP’s shipbuilding industry had accidents, and they were either investigated or died suddenly.
At the same time, the CCP’s aircraft carrier formation is being ridiculed by the international community and Taiwan’s military and civilians across the strait because of its loose combat effectiveness.
In early April this year, President Tsai Ing-wen of the Republic of China stopped in California and met with the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy. The Chinese government was annoyed and threatened retaliation. On the same day, the Shandong aircraft carrier formation crossed the Bashi Strait between the Philippines and Taiwan and entered the waters southeast of Taiwan. The next day, the CCP dispatched three warships and a Ka-28 anti-submarine helicopter to harass Taiwan. However, the CCP’s attempt to intimidate Taiwan’s military and civilians by force has instead exposed the weakness of its maritime military power, which is even considered “ridiculous” by military observers.
Richard D. Fisher, Jr., a senior fellow at the Center for International Assessment and Strategy, an American think tank, told the media that the small number of Chinese ships trying to harass and coerce Taiwan is very vulnerable, especially to U.S. attack submarines. Word.
Fisher said that China’s dispatch of the Shandong aircraft carrier is ridiculous from a military perspective. “Sending the Shandong and its 1,500 Chinese crew to the southeast of Taiwan, which is located in the deepest waters of the Pacific Ocean, is tantamount to suicide. That is an American nuclear attack submarine. ideal combat area.”
“I predict that if this carrier takes any offensive action against the people of Taiwan, it will sink to the bottom of the ocean very quickly. My sympathies go out to the poor sailors on the Shandong. This is a reckless move,” Fisher said.
According to a Voice of America report on May 5 this year, it can be learned from dozens of articles published in journals that have connections with the CCP that the CCP military analysts also realized that the CCP’s aircraft carrier formations have insufficient combat capabilities. Some people said that the CCP The carrier is effectively still in training mode.
Analysts pointed out that the take-off and landing of carrier-based aircraft at night and in bad weather is an important routine operation after the aircraft carrier leaves the shore, but these did not appear in the recent exercises of the Chinese aircraft carrier; and in the conflict, the Chinese aircraft carrier is vulnerable to missiles and Submarine attack, and the Chinese navy has not yet perfected the capability of protective screen operations, especially anti-submarine warfare.
According to the above analysis, the CCP’s aircraft carrier is more like a propaganda piece.
