The U.S. Senate voted by a wide margin on Tuesday night to pass legislation that would prevent TikTok’s owner, Chinese technology company ByteDance, from divesting itself of the popular short-video company over the next nine months to a year, Reuters reported today. app, the bill would ban TikTok in the United States.

The bill was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on Saturday due to widespread concerns in the U.S. Congress that China could obtain Americans’ data or spy on the United States through the app. U.S. President Joe Biden said at the time that he would sign the bill into law today, Wednesday.

The Republican leader of the U.S. Congressional Intelligence Committee, Senator Marco. Rubio said: “For years, we have allowed the Chinese Communist Party to control one of the most popular apps in the United States, but this is dangerously short-sighted. A new law will require its Chinese owners to sell the app. This is a huge blow to the United States It’s a good move.”

The four-year battle over TikTok, used by 170 million people in the United States, is just one front and battle in the internet and technology wars between Washington and Beijing. Last week, Apple said Beijing had ordered it to remove Meta Platforms’ (META.O) and removed WhatsApp and Threads from its app store in China over concerns about China’s national security.

TikTok will challenge the bill on First Amendment grounds, and TikTok users are expected to take legal action again. In November, a U.S. judge in Montana blocked a state ban on TikTok on free speech grounds.

The American Civil Liberties Union said that banning or requiring the divestment of TikTok would “set an alarming global precedent for excessive government control of social media platforms. … If the United States bans foreign-owned platforms now, it will invite other countries to follow the United States’ lead.”

The U.S. Senate voted 79 to 18 in favor of the bill, which comes with a measure to provide $95 billion in major military aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Reuters said the bill may also become a controversial issue in the November presidential election, but Republican presidential candidate Trump urged young voters to consider a possible TikTok ban.
