“Today’s Them” has a strong “all-female” production team. The producer is Han Sanping, the literary director is Han Jianu, the chief screenwriter is Qin Wen, the screenwriter is Xu Siyao, and the director is Du Xiaoyu. The cast includes Song Yi, Charmaine Sheh, Li Chun, Zhang Chao, Wang Renjun, Li Junxian, Zhang Guoli, etc.

This drama focuses on “her” perspective and tells the story of three women in the new era: Lu Zhenzhen, Liang Qingran and Gu Manting. No matter what challenges they face, they never give up their persistence in love and ideals. In the story, Lu, a migrant worker, is truly self-reliant and possesses a unique business philosophy; Liang Qingran, a business elite, is known for putting interests first and having a keen vision; and Gu Manting, a young married woman, is a hot and straightforward girl doted on by her parents. These three completely different life trajectories intersect in Chengdu and create sparks. They also reflect the struggles of contemporary young people in life choices, family relationships, and emotional principles.

“Today’s Them” takes Sichuan and Sichuan cuisine as the background, starting from the life and death of a Sichuan restaurant, and explores many practical issues, such as whether to work hard in big cities or return to your hometown, the obstacles faced by women in advancing in the workplace, and the impact of family on marriage. And the pressure of childbearing, as well as the life and death that must be faced in the process of growing up. These topics provide a wide range of discussion space for the audience.

three love brains

The three female images in “Today’s Them” are very typical: Love Naolu Zhenzhen (played by Song Yishi), the young wife Gu Manting (played by Li Chun), and the strong woman Liang Qingran (played by Charmaine Sheh).

She had a real idea for love, and she chased her boyfriend all the way. She suffered a lot of emotional abuse because of her love-first attitude. Her boyfriend was violent to her after being drunk, and even poured water on her with a faucet and kicked her out. Faced with such brutal behavior, Lu Zhenzhen in the play easily accepted the other party’s apology and empty promises after sobering up. When starting a business, she also had to consider her boyfriend’s feelings. In the end, her boyfriend changed his mind and she was finally able to concentrate on her career.

The little wife Gu Manting, on the surface, is a carefree rich wife who can accompany her husband to participate in various social activities. At the same time, she adheres to the concept of not having children, showing considerable independence. Although Gu Manting likes to listen to the radio and read content related to female independence and growth on weekdays, when she suspected that her husband was cheating, she chose to escape. Her career success is completely dependent on her husband. This passive way of growing up is too old-fashioned.

The strong woman Liang Qingran is a capable woman in the workplace. She has extensive experience and keen insight, and is able to navigate complex business environments with ease. However, when it comes to love, she always feels confused. She often makes concessions in order to cater to men’s preferences, but in the end she discovers that this is not the life she wants. After experiencing a failed relationship, Liang Qingran finally realized that only by being true to herself can she find true happiness.

The old routine of urban drama

The content of “Today’s Them” basically continues the old routines of previous urban dramas, including elements such as love brain, long-distance relationship, strong career woman, and Phoenix man. The heroine is always set in love in the early stage, she is devoted to the man, and only then works hard to work hard for her career after being betrayed.

Throughout the play, the heroine’s behavior seems to revolve around men. Their goals and decisions seem to be for men. Such a setting makes people wonder, can the value of women be reflected only through men? This kind of plot is not only disappointing, but also sad.

Despite being created by an “all-female” production team, the series is still unable to escape from clichéd plots and repeatedly exaggerates women’s anxieties. I sincerely hope that female-themed works can more deeply demonstrate the strength and wisdom of women.
